ABOUT
GH Phipps completed the transformative renovation of the iconic Denver Public Library Central Branch—an essential project that modernizes one of the city’s most beloved civic spaces while preserving its architectural legacy.
This multi-phase, 93,550 SF renovation enhances the building’s safety, accessibility, and functionality to better serve the evolving needs of the community. Significant structural work was performed to open up the main atrium, introducing lower-profile stairs and bridges that improve wayfinding and create a new, expansive event space on the first floor. These changes elevate the visitor experience and bring programming out of the basement and into light-filled areas overlooking Civic Center Park.
Project highlights include:
Complete redesign and relocation of the 10,000 SF Children’s Library
Renovation of all public restrooms, including the addition of an all-gender restroom on the first floor
Modernized elevators and mechanical systems, including upgraded HVAC, plumbing, and improved energy efficiency
Safety and security upgrades throughout the building
Renovation of the Grand Hall, featuring centralized service points
New second-floor meeting rooms and first-floor large programming space
ADA improvements and the installation of new pavers and glass guardrails at Acoma Plaza
Artwork relocation and preservation
The project also served as a pilot for the City and County of Denver’s Workforce Development Program and achieved an 18% MWBE participation goal—reflecting GH Phipps’ commitment to building inclusive, community-forward projects that last.
By blending thoughtful modernization with respect for its original design, the Central Branch is now better equipped to inspire, educate, and connect Denverites for decades to come.
