Colorado School of Mines Parking Garage & Classroom Building

about

GH Phipps is proud to partner with the Colorado School of Mines on a transformational project that enhances both academics and campus accessibility. Located at 17th and Arapahoe streets, this $65 million development combines a state-of-the-art classroom building with a multi-level parking structure, designed to support the university’s growing needs.

The four-story, 50,900-square-foot classroom building includes nine classrooms, a large lecture hall—the largest of its kind on campus—faculty offices, graduate student workspaces, huddle rooms, and breakout spaces for collaboration and independent study. Each classroom is equipped with innovative Skyfold partitions, enabling two rooms to combine into one flexible learning environment, complete with reconfigured AV technology to support larger, active-learning sessions.

The design emphasizes both function and sustainability. The classroom building is equipped with solar panels, while the 935-space parking garage incorporates a capacity-sensing system that alerts drivers to available spaces and includes electric vehicle charging stations. Architecturally, the two structures are unified through design elements such as vertical fins that control light, reduce glare, and minimize headlight spillover into the surrounding neighborhood.

Students and faculty will benefit from a variety of open collaboration areas and an innovative lecture space designed to support multiple instructional formats. The building’s placement also bridges a significant grade change on campus, eliminating accessibility challenges along 17th Street and improving campus connectivity.
